35% eosiniphils on blood work- for lung washings for Idiopathic lung disease- biopsies taken not back yet from Duke


    
Asked by susan marie (Female; 65; No other medical problems, 2 children. SOB only 6-8 months ago when this was discovered. Now she is more and more SOB, on disability, on O2, drops to 86% with 6 min stress test.; Relevant drugs:Pepcid,Prilosec, prednisone 20 mg, allergic to Imuran when they tried it once- ) on Tue 02, Sep 2008 09:00pm

My sister 65 yo has interstitual lung disease.She is now being checked for what kind of lung disease it is,with washings and endoscopy biopsy's.All biopsies have not returned.go on? But the Pulmonologist mentioned that her eosionphills are 35% and that was way abnormal. No Lupus, no RA,In my meager computer medical guide- that is a sure quick sign for Lukemia? Please give me something else to go on, other medical probibility? Other tests? Wait for other biopsies?

Hi there. I'm sorry to learn about her condition. A 35% eosinophil is not tantamount to leukemia, and in fact, that's one of the last things I would consider. Increase in eosinophil count may be an indication of severe allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, like that we see during asthmatic attacks. This can also be seen in patients who are chronically exposed to certain antigens. High eosihophils can also be reflective or a parasitic infection, and in fact there is a pulmonary syndrome of parasitic infection + eosihophilia + lung disease. This is known as Loeffler's syndrome. A more definitive diagnosis will be provided for us by a transthoracic pulmonary biopsy (Whether Ct scan guided or video assisted) or an examination of bronchial washings (endoscopically). I suggest you discuss these options and possibilities with her doctors. Regards.
