Bladder cancer - rusty colored slough, pressure in low abdomen and unable to start stream sometimes

I was diagnosed a week ago with bladder cancer. Occasional bright red blood in urine over the last 3 months Over the last several months I have had rusty coloered slough(looks like skin or clumpy cells) into the toilet or on a pad (worn for bladder urge incontincence). Cystoscopy was performed in the office last week Thursday. The Dr said the tumor looks like a rasberry hanging on a stalk. The only other symptom I have is pressure in low abdomen and unable to start stream sometimes. What can I expect post op? Will it be painful? Will there be bladder spasms? Will the bladder continue to bleed? for how long? I have heard that cancer is a fungus. Does the pathologist test the tissue for fungus? 54 year old female, cauc - no previous cancers or family hx of cancer CT of abdomen with contrast and barrium was clear. I am scheduled for surgery on March 18. The surgery will remove the tumor and then Mytomicin will be instilled. Should I get a second opinion? Is there something I should be doing over the next 10 days? Is there anything I should be reading, or questions I should be asing?

Hi. Bladder cancer is not related to a fungus and I believe there is no reason to test for such after the procedure. From what you have described, I believe that the procedure they will do is plain excision of the tumor through the stalk, with preservation of the entire urinary bladder. The bleeding would hopefully stop after this, since the cause of the bleeding (the tumor) will be removed. The post-operative intra-vesical chemotherapy with mitomycin is directed to lower the chance of the cancer returning. The side effects of this chemotherapy may by difficulty in urination, bladder spasms with some form of pain or discomfort, but these should subside a few days after the instillation. It is important for you to drink a lot of fluids in preparation and even after the procedure, so that residual bleeding can be flushed out and the bladder walls can be protected. Regards.
