Blood draws and blood pressure when nodes taken from both sides.

Asked by dixie46 (Female; 61 ) on Mon 30, Jun 2008 08:42pm

Had mastsectomy on right breast 3-08. Idc,stage 1, grade 2, er/pr her-. Snb done no nodes. Mast, no chemo and on arimidex. Five nodes taken. Found lump in left breast June, mammo, ultrasound, biospy found to be maligant. Tumor looks to be from path very similar to first one. Though to have been missed in mammo and biospy the first time. Question about another SNB in other arm. Will I ever be able to have blood pressure or sticks in either arm or will they have to be taken in the leg area to avoid lymphdema risk? Onco said it was necessary to do sentinal node in this case. Don't know yet how many will be taken.

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Wed 09, Jul 2008 10:35pm:

Hi there. The sentinel node procedure and biopsy carries a minimal risk of lymphedema on the involved extremity as compared to standard procedures such as axillary node dissections. With this in mind, I believe that it is still possible to utilize both of your arms for minor procedures such as blood extractions or blood pressure determinations. You may also want to undergo rehabilitation as supervised by a physical therapist to further decrease this chance of developing lymphedema. Regards.
