Answer by Dr Heinrik M, MD  on Mon 10, Mar 2008 08:45am:

Hi, With your previous history of thyroid cancer, chances are the bone problem is a metastasis. About 20% of thyroid cancers have involvement outside the thyroid and these include bony sites. Bone cysts are rare, and usually occur in children. Although you made no mention of your age, the median age for thyroid cancers in women is around 40, so the odds of a bone cyst seems remote. A primary bone cancer is also plausible, these are also more common in children and are rarer than bone cysts. I think the first person to see is the endocrinologist or a nuclear medicine specialist. The first step would be to perform a radioiodine scan to determine if it is indeed bone metastasis and its extent. Subsequently therapy would involve administration of radioactive iodine.

Comment by PJ on Sun 13, Mar 2011 06:19pm: My doctor did an x ray of my hip because I have a lot of hip pain. He "thinks" I have bursitis. The x ray showed nothing abnormal. What is the next step? an MRI? The x ray, as I understand it will not show bursitis. He said the back x ray showed some arthritic is the lower back. I am 53. I am a fitness instructor so I would say I am in pretty good shape. I don't run but do walk 2 miles 4 times or more a week. My works outs involve free weights a total body work out 3 times a week for about 40 minutes. He wants me to limit walking "what ever that means" and do yoga. Resistance training should be light he says. I don't know if I agree with backing off the training but what type of test will tell me what is really causing the hip pain? On a scale of 1 to 10 its an 8.
