COLON CANCER AND ABCESS ON TAIL BONE - Any specialist who can deal with abscess

Hello, I have a lovely friend who had colon cancer, then last year it came back and had surgery to take tumour out, and they also took her bladder out as she had tumour on it.She has a coloscomy bag for urine and her stool.The situation is she had a abcess on her tail bone and its draining but its been 3 months. How long does abcess take to heal up? They have told her that she has some small spots on her lung and liver and want her to get on chemo, but they wont do it until the abcess is cleared up. That is taking ages and seems like no one is doing any thing about it. My question is can she not have chemo now while she has abcess? and is there a spcialist who can deal with abscess, as it seems no one is doing any thing about it. Thank you .

Hi, Unfortunately, you friend has developed a sacral abscess probably arising from a bed sore. It is impossible to predict exactly how long it will take to heal, but it may take a long time. It is difficult to intervene to make it heal faster. You may like to consult a surgeon and discuss the possibility of debridement of the wound. Pus can be taken from the abscess and sent for culture and sensitivity, and appropriate antibiotics prescribed. If chemotherapy is given when an active focus of infection is present anywhere in the body (in this case the tailbone) there is risk of widespread infection or septicemia. This is because chemotherapy is followed by a period of "neutropenia" or low white blood cell count, during which the patient is susceptible to infections. So if your friend is given chemotherapy, the neutropenia may allow her infection to spread from the tailbone to other parts of her body.
