Colon cancer symptom? I wake up after about 5 hours for no apparent reason.

Asked by dugan (Male; 80; General good health; Relevant drugs:BPH meds ) on Mon 12, May 2008 06:28am

I wake up regularly after about 5 hours sleep - sense something is not right in my lower abdomen but no pain or actual discomfort. I infrequently sense any urgency to urinate, but do so anyway. I am seldom able to get back to sleep. I have had a number of colonoscopies over the years - several finding 1 or 2 small benign pollyps - my last was either 3 or 4 years ago. I take meds for BPH, am 5'11", weigh 190 and walk 3 miles daily. Feeling mildly sleep deprived and wonder if my body is trying to tell me something.

Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD  on Mon 12, May 2008 09:29am:

Hi, At age eighty, your only complaints are early morning awakening. Apart from BPH medications, you have no other illnesses. Your prostate symptoms too are well controlled. Having had several normal colonoscopies over the years, the last one 4 yrs ago, I think it is very unlikely that your symptoms point to colon cancer. The fact that you have no pain or abdominal discomfort, nor have any change in bowel habits, is a reassuring sign. Waking up after 5 hours of sleep is quite natural for an elderly male. You may like to take a short nap in the afternoon to compensate for waking up early. Keep up the exercise schedule. If your complaint of "something is not right in my lower abdomen" persists, you may like to consult an internist. All the very best to you!
