DCIS and the likelihood of return or the likelihood of a new primary event

Asked by cabo (Female; 46; dcis right breast May 2007. Hypothyroidism since 1991. ; Relevant drugs:tamoxifen, synthroid ) on Thu 19, Jun 2008 01:57pm

4mm dcis, cribriform, micropapillary type. No comedic cells. Removed by biopsy, large, clean lumpectomy sample. No rads recommended. On tamoxifen. Six month mammos, yearly Mri. What is the lifetime risk of dcis or invasive in the good breast? The docs said the risk of recurrance in the same spot of the DCIS is about 6% in ten years for someone with this pathology. Roughly 3.5% chance dcis again, 2.5% invasive. Does that sound about right? They all called it a pre-cancer.It's been a year and I can't put this behind me. I feel like it's just a matter of time that the other shoe will drop. Any suggestions or comments? Thank you for this service.

Hi there. The figures that your doctor quoted are quite accurate. The risks of DCIS returning or development of invasive cancer are still further lowered by the Tamoxifen treatment that you are currently undergoing. I also have no question regarding how well your doctors are handling this in terms of the regular surveillance. I suggest that you take it easy and just continue with the surveillance process. The likelihood of the disease coming back is low, and is further lowered by the tamoxifen intake. Regards and God bless.
