Do I have a high risk of developing cervical cancer?

Asked by harmony (Male ) on Sun 06, Apr 2008 12:44pm

I have been diagnosed with HPV, I have been visiting the Coloscopy clinic. I have had polops removed and been diagnosed once with level CIN3. I had the precancerous cells taken away with a loop diathermy. Since then the abnormal cells have come back and this worries me. Especially as I am still having pain if I have inercourse bleeding afterwoulds and on other occassions when I shouldn't be like in between periods. I feel very tired alot of the time and seem to catch any bug or cold going.

Hi. I need to know a couple of things so that I can give you a more satisfactory answer: 1. How old are you? The steps in the management of pre-cancerous cervical lesions differ slightly, depending on whether the woman is less than or greater than 21 years of age. For example, a finding of low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (CIN 1) would only warrant a repeat Pap smear after 12 months if the woman is 21 years old or younger, while the same lesion in an older woman will require a more aggressive procedure (colposcopy) to actively look for abnormal cells. 2. You mentioned that “the abnormal cells have come back”. What exactly is the nature of those recurrent abnormal cells (low grade or high grade)? Do you have CIN 3 again? How long is the interval between the loop diathermy and the reappearance of the abnormal cells? 3. What HPV subtype (e.g. HPV 16, 18) were you infected with? Offhand, the recurrence of those abnormal cells could mean that the loop diathermy was not able to excise all the abnormal areas (the surgical margins are positive). Or if the reappearance of abnormal cells happened after a considerable duration of time has elapsed, it's possible that you could have had a subsequent infection with another HPV subtype, which induced the development of another precancerous lesion.
