Eleven years ago, at the age of 45, uterine cells were found on a routine pap smear. I had a D&C and the pathology indicated serious hyperplasia and I was advised to get a hysterectomy. Because it was a small rural hospital, I had the sample sent to a leading women's hospital for a 2nd opinion. This opinion differed and called it prolonged estrogen effect. It was then advised I had it treated with high doses of Prometrium which I did and the uterine tissue reverted back to normal. To be on the safe side, I have had an in office endometrial biopsy every year since then and all have been normal. My doctor said now that I am 56, it is time to stop doing this routinely. My question is: should I stop testing and if I do, if I would develop abnormal uterine cells or cancer, would there be symptoms to alert me since I would not be tested yearly?

I think that it would be best to follow your physician's advice on this. You have been doing alright now for the last 10 years or so, and i think the credit should also go to your treating physician. Since he/she is well versed with your case and knows all the past relevant medical history , they would only decide the further management plans keeping your best interest in mind. But you can still follow up regularly with your doctor as you have been doing up till now. Report any abnormal symptoms that you notice to your doctor immediately.
