Her2 / ER/PR Stage1, Grade 1 Breast Cancer treated with Herceptin and Navelbine


    
Asked by swimangel72 (Female; 53; Breast cancer dx in 2/08 - 0/7 node negative; unilateral mastectomy followed by immediate Diep; Relevant drugs:Herceptin and Navelbine every other week ) on Tue 17, Jun 2008 12:54pm

I was diagnosed in February with node negative infiltrating ductal carcinoma, Stage 1, Grade 1 - had a mastectomy followed by Diep reconstruction. My tumor is ER/PR and Her2 - my oncologist has me Herceptin and Navelbine, once every two weeks. I'm concerned because I don't know any studies where Navelbine has been proven to be effective as a front-line defense against Stage 1, Grade 1 cancer. All the studies I've seen show it is used for patients who have mets. Should I be concerned?

Hi there. I agree with you that so far, there has been limited trials using Navelbine in the adjuvant setting for early stage breast cancer. There is one trial called the FinHer trial which combines Navelbine and Herceptin for 9 doses, but this is followed by 4 doses of Adriamycin and Cyclophosphamide. However, even in the absence of published trials, some institutions and cancer centers have their own protocols, which in their own setting, they have proven to be equally effective. There are also a lot of studies that never gets published due to logistic reasons and your oncologist may be referring to these. I suggest you discuss this with your oncologist, and I hope that your treatment will be as uneventful as possible. Regards and God bless.
