Hi,
Your sister has advanced stage Hodgkins lymphoma. In such patients, a slightly guarded prognosis is indicated by the following factors: low serum albumin, anemia, male gender, Stage 4 disease, age over 45 years, high WBC count, and low lymphocyte count.
The approach to her treatment will include combination chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy. The standard chemotherapy consists of 6 to 8 cycles of a combination of Adriamycin, Bleomycin, Vinblastine, and Dacarbazine (ABVD), although other regimens (Stanford V, BEACOPP, etc) are also in use.
Studies have shown that when these modern chemotherapy regimens are used, 60 to 70% of patients with advanced stage Hodgkins lymphoma are alive after 5 years of treatment.
You also lost a sister to pancreatic cancer. Studies prove that about 10 to 20% of pancreatic cancers have a familial basis.
You should not worry unduly about your health and risk of cancer. However, it is advisable for you (as it is for everyone) to adopt a cancer-reducing lifestyle. This includes quitting smoking, moderating alcohol consumption, eating a healthy balanced diet including fruits and vegetables, reducing red meat, regular exercise, maintaining ideal body weight, and getting yourself screened regularly for cancer (Pap smear, breast self examination, mammogram, etc).
