How long should of a wait should I have between diagnosis of Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer and the surgery?

Asked by barb1958 (Female; 50; I had a hysterectomy age 34 - still have ovaries. I have dense breasts with a lot of cysts. My mother had breast cancer at age 50 and spread to her bones 2 years later. She survived and is now 85 years old! ; Relevant drugs:none ) on Wed 02, Jul 2008 03:47am

How long is too long between diagonsis of cancer and the surgery?: I was diagnosed on May 28th with invasive lobular breast cancer (biopsy of lump) Discovered by inverting nipple in April. Had breast MRI on June 4th and was told on June 9th that I have multi centric disease and decided on a mastectomy but the doctor said a lump showed on the other side and they wanted to do a MRI assisted biopsy on that which was done on June 18th. Got the results June 25th that it was benign but could possibly become cancerous in the future. I decided to go ahead with the mastectomy on just the right breast (thought about bi-lateral but just decided against it) Consulted with a plastic surgeaon about reconstruction and decided on implant. Between scheduling conflicts and vacations with the 2 surgeons my surgery is now scheduled for July 28th. My question is this: Is this too long to wait for the surgery. I could have the mastectomy next week without the reconstruction if I want.

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Wed 09, Jul 2008 10:50pm:

Hi there. For any diagnosis of cancer, it is indeed best if treatment can be done as soon a possible, especially the surgery since this is the best chance for cure and long term survival. Theoretically, cancer cells are actively dividing without us noticing, and even as we post and write, it has a tendency to grow and eventually enlarge. In your situation, it is best to have the surgery right away. Reconstruction of the breast can be immediate or delayed, and the results of which are equivalent in terms of cosmesis and outcome. I suggest you talk this over at length with your doctors since it is almost 2 months since you have been diagnosed, and a lot could have already happened with the breast lesions. Regards and God bless.
