I've been having stomach pain for 6 weeks. Taking prevcid. Sister just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer


    
Asked by jackieblue (Female; 53; stomach problems. Had endoscopy done. Everything looked good. I am taking previcid, and it is helping me with my stomach pain. My sister age 63 was just diagnosed with fourth stage pancreatic cancer. My GI suggested I get a ct span for my peace of mind. My sister was just diagnosed at age 63 with fourth stage pancreatic cancer. I am 53 and have been having stomach problems. To much acid. on previced Should I have a CT scan??

Hi there. I understand your concern regarding this matter. While your sister developed pancreatic cancer, it does not automatically mean that you will develop one yourself, but I understand that it is very hard to keep a peace of mind especially if you are experiencing this kind of pain. The problem is that presently, there are no proven ways to screen for pancreatic cancer and even CT scan has its own limitations. Furthermore, every procedure carries its own risk especially if the use of contrast media is warranted. The question also of how often you should do the CT scan in order to detect cancers like this is still debated upon. I suggest you discuss this angles with your doctor regarding the benefit and risks of CT scan imaging, but in the end, it may be worthwhile for you to undertake such procedure for your peace of mind.
