Is it likely my fathers prostate cancer has returned?

Asked by heil.julie (Male; 57 ) on Mon 02, Jun 2008 04:53am

My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago and was treated with radiotherapy and hormone treatment. His last psa result which was at the beginning of the year said the levels were back to normalish! which meant he was fine. Two weeks ago he had a bleed and has been to the doctor for a PSA test, of which he is awaiting the result and is awaiting appointment to have the camera inserted. Is this likely to be his cancer returning?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Tue 03, Jun 2008 12:38am:

Hi there. What happened to your father recently may indeed be a sign of the prostate cancer returning, but there are also alternative explanations that are equally possible. Infections in the prostate or in the urinary bladder may cause bleeding. Organs that has received radiation in the past, may easily be injured and the immune defenses of these organs may not be that strong. Hence, these can be prone to infections and this may explain the bleeding that your father recently experienced. Another possible cause is the presence of stones in the urinary tract which can likewise cause this bleeding. The PSA determination will be really helpful, as well as the scope procedure. I suggest that you keep close contact with his doctors to monitor any latest development, and be advised about the condition. I sure hope that the PSA levels will be normal, and that the scope will give us definitive answers. Wishing you and your father all the best. Regards and God bless.
