Itching? Could this be lymphoma? Only symptom is constant itching sensation all over body.

Asked by john355 (Male; 26; Healthy until 2006. Was diagnosed with mononucleosis. Started itching all over september 2006. Still itching almost a year and a half later; Relevant drugs:zyrtec, atarax, allegra, doxepin, singulair, zantac ) on Fri 30, May 2008 10:17pm

I contracted mononucleosis back in May 2006. It took me months to recover. I started having a constant itching all over my body that has really not improved. I have been suffering from this itching for approximately 1.5 years and have been on numerous itching medications. I know that itching can be a sign of lymphoma. I don't have any other symptoms such as night sweats, fevers, or weight loss. I only itch. I had a ct scan (64 slice scanner) of chest and abdomen last month with contrast. The scan came back normal. What is the possibility that my itching is being caused by a lymphoma? Thanks

Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD  on Fri 30, May 2008 10:48pm:

Hi, Itching can indeed be a sign of lymphoma. However, itching is usually caused by other more common, benign, causes. The fact that you do not have any enlarged lymph nodes, no fever, no weight loss, and no night sweats are all good signs. Another comforting factor is the fact that your CT chest and abdomen are normal. Thus we can be reasonably sure that you currently have no evidence of lymphoma. You have educated yourself well about the early signs and symptoms of lymphoma. Please keep a lookout for these, and see a doctor if in doubt. But don't worry too much about it. You can continue to visit an allergy specialist, internist, or dermatologist for this complaint. The treatment for pruritus is long and not always successful. I wish you all the very best!
