Itchy, burning skin all over for about 20 months. What is probability this is coming from Hodgkin's or NHL?

Asked by john355 (Male; 27; Have been healthy in the past. Itchy, burning sensation started approximately 20 months ago.; Relevant drugs:Zyrtec. Periactin. Atarax. Doxepin. Prednisone when symptoms are worse. ) on Mon 30, Jun 2008 05:59pm

I have had itchy, burning skin for about 20 months. My skin will turn red, but I do not have a rash of any sort. There are times when the symptoms will go away completely, but then they will return. I do not have any other symptoms like fever, night sweating, or weight loss. I have had an MRI of brain, chest x-ray, ct scan of chest and abdomen, and multiple blood tests. All scans have come back normal. The results of my most recent are: SODIUM 140 MMOL/L Range 135-145 POTASSIUM 4.5 MMOL/L Range 3.5-5.0 CHLORIDE 103 MMOL/L Range 98-107 CO2 30 MMOL/L Range 22-30 UREA NITROGEN 11 MG/DL Range 7-21 CREATININE 0.95 MG/DL Range 0.70-1.30 ANION GAP 7 MMOL/L Range 9-15 BUN/CREAT RATIO 12 UNDEFINED GLUCOSE,RANDOM 81 MG/DL Range 65-179 CALCIUM 9.3 MG/DL Range 8.5-10.2 MAGNESIUM 2.1 MG/DL Range 1.6-2.2 PHOSPHORUs 3.5 MG/DL Range 2.4-4.5 URIC ACID 6.3 MG/DL Range 4.0-9.0 PROTEIN,TOTAL 7.0 G/DL Range 6.6-8.0 ALBUMIN 4.6 G/DL Range 3.5-5.0 BILIRUBIN,TOTAL 0.3 MG/DL Range 0.0-1.2 AST 31 U/L Range 19-55 ALT 41 U/L Range 19-72 ALKALINE PHOSPHA 100 U/L Range 38-126 GGT 46 U/L Range 13-68 LD 509 U/L Range 338-610 WBC 6.9 Range 4.5-11.0 RBC 4.60 Range 4.50-5.90 HGB 14.4 Range 13.5-17.5 HCT 41.2 % Range 41.0-53.0 MCV 89 Range 80-100 MCH 31 Range 26-34 MCHC 35 Range 31-37 RDW 12.6 % Range 12.0-15.0 MPV 8.5 Range 7.0-10.0 PLATELET COUNT 303 Range 150-440 ABSOLUTE NEUTS 3.9 Range 2.0-7.5 ABSOLUTE LYMPHS 2.1 Range 1.5-5.0 ABSOLUTE MONOS 0.4 Range 0.2-0.8 ABSOLUTE EOS 0.2 Range 0.0-0.4 ABSOLUTE BASOS 0.0 Range 0.0-0.1 LUC 2 % Range 0-4 What is the possibility that my itchy burning skin symptom could be coming from Hodgkin's or NHL? Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Wed 09, Jul 2008 10:29pm:

Hi there. It is rather unlikely that your symptoms is due to lymphoma. Lymphomas present with enalrged lymph nodes in any part of the body, and cutaneous lymphoma usually present with a rash. The absence of these makes the diagnosis highly unlikely. Your blood counts are also normal which makes the diagnosis all the more not plausible. Other conditions that can lead to this would include superficial infections (fungal), autoimmune disorders, or rare primary skin problems. If all work ups lead to nothing, I suggest that you discuss with your doctors regarding a skin punch biopsy. Regards and God bless.
