Kidney Cancer - Treatment options and prognosis for kidney cancer

Asked by rr03 (Male ) on Mon 17, Mar 2008 02:16pm

I have just been diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. What questions should I be sure to ask my Urological Oncologist at my first appointment to talk about treatment and prognosis? The mass is 4.5 cm and in the left kidney. It was discovered during an IVP/CT Scan for another issue not connected to the cancer.

Answer by Dr Dennis S, MD  on Mon 17, Mar 2008 05:36pm:

Hi. According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data, it is estimated that there will be 51,190 new cases of cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis in 2007. What are your symptoms? What is the stage of your kidney cancer? Treatment of kidney cancer depends on the extent of the disease. For localized kidney cancer, surgery can be done. Radical nephrectomy is the standard surgical procedure for tumors more than 4 cm in size. This can be done by different approaches (open versus laparoscopic). The prognosis depends on the stage on the stage of the disease, as well as on the histologic type. The 5-year survival is as follows: 96% for stage I, 82% for stage II, 64% for stage III, and 23% for stage IV.

I am not sure what stage the cancer is at. I had the CT Scan done and I have not yet met with the Urological
Oncologist. I would like some guidance on what questions I should ask him at that first meeting. Thank you so
much for your quick response.

Comment by Dr Dennis S, MD on Wed 19, Mar 2008 06:06pm: Hi. Here are some of the suggested questions you can ask your oncologist: What is the stage of kidney cancer? What is the histologic type? What form of treatment will be given? What is the prognosis or risk of recurrence after treatment? As I’ve mentioned, the prognosis will depend on the stage of the disease and histologic type. It is very important to plan the next step in the management of your kidney cancer. Good luck.
