Looking For Additional Treatment for Young Man with Brain & Spinal Cord Melanoma

Asked by concerned mom (Male; 26; No health problems prior to cancer; Relevant drugs:Three different antibiotics, oxycontin - 20 mg every 8 hours, percocet - as needed,, decadron, lovenox, protonix, ativan as needed ) on Fri 18, Jul 2008 03:45pm

My 26 year old son has melanoma on the brain stem and in the spinal fluid with multiple tumors in the meneges around the spine. He had surgery on the brain stem tumor which was partially removed on February 7, 2008. He has recently been treated with four doses of intrathecal cyterabine given two weeks apart. He has completely lost the use of his legs and recently has had a staff infection in the spinal fluid which is being agressively treated with antibiotics. No other tumors have been found anywhere on the skin or in his body at this time. We have been told that the average life expectancy for cases like his is 3-6 months. Do you know of any clinical trials or alternative treatments he might qualify for? I know his condition is quite rare but we want to explore all possible options for treatment. Thank you for any help you can give Concerned Mom

Hi. I'm sorry to learn about what happenned. Melanoma is indeed a disease that is very difficult to treat, not only due to the stubborness of the tumors themselves, but also because there are limited agents to use, especially if metastatic or complicated. Clinical trial participation is indeed recommended for these situations to achieve best possible care and to develop novel treatments. I have searched the NCI regarding the clinical trials available and I believe you can find one that can be suited for your son's condition. You can access the trial list here: http://www.cancer.gov/search/ResultsClinicalTrialsAdvanced.aspx?protocolsearchid=4873839 Regards and God bless.
