Lymph Nodes

Asked by cindy (Female; 64; Breast Cancer, Mastectomy (R) 3/10, Mastectomy (L) 7/10, Chemotherapy; Relevant drugs:Arimidex ) on Tue 07, Sep 2010 03:05pm

My second Mastectomy was 8 July 2010, no lymph nodes were looked at. On one of the biopsy slides it was reported that the carcinoma in situ did show that it was invasive. I have an appointment with my surgeon next week. So that I have as much information as possible, do you think it would be helpful to now examine the lymph nodes also could you please tell me is there a procedure to examine lymph nodes without general anesthesia? Can they be removed with just a local anesthesia or is there another method entirely that can be used to examine them? Thank you very much. Julia

Answer by bobby s, md  on Fri 10, Sep 2010 09:58am:

Dear Julia,
You have not mentioned your medical and cancer history in detail.
When a superficial lymph node is required from the axilla for diagnostic purposes, it is often possible to do it without general anesthesia. But I do not think that a full oncological axillary clearance is possible without general anesthesia. Please discuss in detail with your entire medical team the value of a repeat surgery to look for nodes.
All the best, and God Bless!
