MRI and possible false readings

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 41; Torn tendon in elbow, underwent PT for 1.5 years; Relevant drugs:none ) on Sun 12, Oct 2008 04:37am

My wife recently had a bone scan with a contrast agent performed on the same day as an MRI. Both were performed to further a diagnosis of the pain she has been having for more than a year now. Her right (dominant) arm turns color, temperature, goes numb, and extreme pain. She has gone through 4 doctors now, and her latest doctor thinks she may have a possible brachial plexus injury, or RSD. After we received the report of the MRI, we were very disturbed. The report suggested we consult with a hematologist for possible leukemia, lymphoma, or other related cancers. My question is...Is it possible to have a false reading due to the contrast used in the bone scan?

Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD  on Sun 12, Oct 2008 05:09pm:

Hi, Magnetic resonance imaging is used to visualize the structure and function of the body. It provides detailed images of the body in any plane. Contrast agents are injected intravenously to enhance the appearance of blood vessels, tumors or inflammation. Most contrast agents used are selected for their specific magnetic properties. There has not been any literature with false readings associated with MRI or from the contrast agents because of its high specificity and sensitivity. It would help if you discuss with your doctor the findings of the MRI to clear any doubts and questions. A second opinion may be done if results are not still clear. Take care and regards.
