My father scratched and then cut or clipped a mole off his neck - Cut on neck started spiralling

Asked by jennifer (Male ) on Sun 30, Mar 2008 07:43pm

My father scratched a mole on his left side of neck where it was hanging. It became painful and he clipped or cut it off. That was about 3 0r 4 years ago. Last summer the place on his neck started spiralling and the cut has now become as large as my palm and something has affected his ear to a point it has created a hole all the way through. Please give me some ideas. He was turned away medical attention because he had no insurance or money to pay. He is only 61 years old and I dont want this situation to take his life because of too long of waiting for medical attention. If you have any information please help. he has been turned away but was diagnosed verbally he had a type of skin cancer and that it has already affected his lymph nodes. This will have to be surgically debrised and cleaned but No one will help. I am his daughter and I am running into a dead end.

Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD  on Mon 31, Mar 2008 12:56pm:

Hi Jennifer, I am sorry to hear about your fathers plight. You have been told that he has a sort of skin cancer that has spread to the regional lymph nodes. Without proper medical attention, it will be difficult to salvage the situation, especially since you say that the local lesion has spread and caused the appearance of a "hole". Surgical debridement, while useful in controlling infection, may not help cure the underlying disease. For that, a biopsy needs to be taken to make an appropriate diagnosis, followed by a staging procedure including a CT scan of the head and neck. Only then can a sound decision be taken regarding the management. Time is important, and please try to seek the help of friends, relatives, local government and social resources, and also the local parish. I wish you courage and all the very best during what must surely be a stressful and sad period for you.
