My husband has recurrent stage III papillary thyroid cancer... he had total thyroidectomy a year ago, cancer had invaded surrounding tissue, which also was removed and was followed by radio active iodine treatment...now a cancerous nodule has returned below the thyroid bed, in less than a year...he had FNA of the nodule and it was found to be malignant...his Doc suspects it to be in the node...he will be having surgery next week to excise the nodule...also the nodule was discovered on an ultrasound, then he had a PET scan, which did not show the nodule...what is his prognosis?...

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Fri 05, Sep 2008 09:02pm:

Hi. As long as all the focus of disease or cancer can be removed, even if recurrent, the prognosis will be much better. Also, the status of the lymph nodes in papillary thyroid cancer, does not impact prognosis that much as compared let's say to the way lymph nodes impact breast cancer prognosis. Furthermore, the papillary nature of the cancer makes the disease much more favorable. I believe that even at this stage, 5 year survival rates can still be above 80%. I believe that after this operation to remove the recurrence, he may still receive additional radioactive iodine treatment if the previous dosage is still not on the limit. Regards and God bless.
