My husband is 74 and has been diagnosed with Esophageal T-3 N0 Mo and has received 26 radiation treatments and 4 wks of chemotherapy w/xeloda. Those 2 have been stopped because of WBC drop to 1.3. He is going to be scheduled for surgery in about 4wks. He wants to know what would happen if he decided not to have the surgery. He's feeling pretty kow down right now, has radiation treatments, and then we head home for the 4 weeks.

Answer by bobby s, md  on Fri 10, Sep 2010 09:48am:

Hello,
I am sorry to hear of your husbands medical issues over the years.
The principles of treatment of any cancer at an early stage involve local therapy (surgery), regional therapy (radiation) and systemic therapy (chemotherapy).
In case he decides not to have surgery, it may have a big impact on the eventual outcome. In other words, chances of cure are higher if he undergoes full therapy including surgery. Outcomes of surgery for early stage esophageal cancer have improved with recent advances.
All the best, and God Bless!
