Oral Cancer - Feeling something stuck in back of throat near right tonsil area

Hello. I am a 29 year od woman. Yes, I smoke (or smoked- I recently quit). For the past few months now, I've had this feeling like something is 'stuck' or present in the back of my throat- more specifically my right tonsil. I went to the dentist last week and asked him to check it out. He says he cannot see anything unusual. This feeling has been there for months now, and sometimes it's more prominent than other times. I do not feel it when I eat or drink- it's basically when my mouth is 'idle'. I have been under considerable amount of stress lately, so perhaps this couls be some sort of manifestation, however, it seems odd that it would only be on one side of my mouth (right tonsil area). The dentist referred me to a E.N.T., but I have been unsuccessful of getting an appointment yet. I am SO unbelievably scared. PLEASE GOD, don't let this be cancer

Hi, Unfortunately, as most cancers such as those in the oral cavity present with non-specific symptoms, I can’t really say it is not cancer. The definite diagnosis would require sampling the suspect area with a biopsy. The best step indeed is to make the appointment with the ENT. The absence of symptoms while eating and drinking is a good sign, as cancers generally present with these problems. If you don’t feel any lumps on your neck- that is also a good sign. In the meantime, it would be a good idea to remove things that may potentially worsen the condition. Maintain the smoke-free status, try to avoid alcohol, and very hot drinks.

Comment by bru61 on Fri 28, Mar 2008 07:16pm: my thoughts are with you that this is not cancer... if it end up to be cancer, keep in mind that there are hundreds of experiment drugs in clinical trials... a ton of hope!! and please do not start smoking again! don't smoke! Warm wishes
