Pain in left side over a year after and sigmoid resection.

Asked by rachel (Female; 42; In early 2007 I had a sigmoid resection to remove a 6cm sessile tan tumour. The tumour had invaded the muscularis propria but not further. After surgery I was asked to have a CT and colonoscopy in 12 months. The CT scan showed cysts in the liver. The colonoscopy found 2 x 1 cm polyps that were resulting from scar tissue. The next colonoscopy was scheduled for 18 months. No bloods tests have been requested.; Relevant drugs:None. ) on Thu 22, May 2008 04:31pm

I have been experiencing intermittent pain in the left side for approximately one month. I have been thinking it is muscle strain, but the pain keeps returning. I am avoiding going to the doctor in case it is just a trivial muscle pain, but I am also anxious and avoiding facing the possibility that the cancer has returned. My last colonoscopy was only five months ago.

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Fri 23, May 2008 01:41am:

Hi there. The pain that you are experiencing can come from several causes, and more commonly this can indeed be due to simple muscle stress or fatigue. The pain can also come from some damaged nerves that was acquired from the previous operation. However, knowing your background of a sigmoid malignancy, any new pain or any new symptom for that matter should be worked up and treated as if it were a tumor recurrence until it is proven otherwise. I suggest that you have this evaluated by your doctor and possibly do some tests such as CEA levels (which if elevated can give us a clue if this is indeed a recurrence) or imaging studies such as a CT scan. A repeat colonoscopy may also be helpful if your doctor deemed it necessary. I hope that everything will turn out fine and that this is really just due to something benign. Regards and God bless.
