Answer by Dr Dennis S, MD  on Wed 05, Mar 2008 05:35pm:

Hi. Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the US, based on the American Cancer Society facts and figures. The peak incidence is in the seventh and eighth decades of life. The average age at diagnosis is 60 to 65 years. Survival in patients with untreated pancreatic cancer is dismal. The 1-year survival rate and the 5-year survival rate are 19% and 4%, respectively, for all stages combined. About 80% of cases are metastatic at the time of diagnosis. Treatment is palliative in advanced pancreatic cancer. The risks and benefits of undergoing treatment should be weighed. Most of the time, patients with advanced pancreatic cancer are debilitated, with poor functional status, and are symptomatic. Thus, the treatment strategy that can be given to the patient is limited. I just have some clarifications: Was a biopsy done on the pancreas or other more accessible site? What is her CA 19-9 level? What is her present functional status? Aside from her heart problem, what are her co-morbid illnesses?
