Soy Protein Isolate Powder for Throat Cancer Patient


    
Asked by blchaffin (Male; 76; Smoker of 60+ years suffering from asbestiosis and throat cancer with a small spot of cancer on a breast bone.; Relevant drugs:Dilantin, Lisinopril, Fexofenadine, Docusate, Diclofenac, Doxzosin, Hydroco, Proair, Spiriva, Nasonex, Advair, Mucinex DM, Xyloca/Benad/Milanta, Zolpidem, and Oxycodon ) on Thu 22, May 2008 08:15am

Is Soy Protein Isolate Powder safe/beneficial for a throat cancer patient on radiation therapy who is 76 years old, having trouble keeping weight on, and taking the referenced medications?

Hi, Radiation therapy can result in severe mucositis of the mouth and throat. This makes swallowing painful. Patients become even more nutritionally poor as a result. There are no large studies establishing the benefit of high protein diets in throat cancer patients. The idea is to provide bland, nutritious, semi-solid, palatable food, in small quantities and at frequent intervals. All the best.
