Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Sun 15, Jun 2008 10:22pm:

Hi. I'm sorry to learn what happened. Stage IV lung cancer is really an incurable disease even with all the modern treatments available. Chemotherapy is only aimed to control tumor spread and control other symptoms such as pain and dyspnea. However, the cancer still progresses after some time while on chemotherapy. The median survival with chemotherapy is about 8 to 10 months, and without treatment, we expect median survival of just about 5-6 months. During these periods without treatment, it is best that she be referred to a hospice facility where other symptoms such as dyspnea, and especially pain can be addressed. Regards and God bless.

Thank you so much for your honesty. The doctors told me 9-11 months but she is very weak and sleeping alot.
Is sleeping part of this disease. She is complaining of pain in her groin area where her legs meet her body.
They did a biopsy and found this nasty stuff in her liver. Thank you again for being candid with me, I do
appreciate it.

Comment by Janice Lane on Fri 13, May 2011 08:29am: my husband has non-small cell lung cancer. He had a bone removed from his hip march/09 hes had radiation, chemotherapy through the vain, chemo pills and the doctor says quite often its worse if they have radiation at this point. He coughs steady he lost 25 pounds. Hes been given pills to increase his appetite. His blood pressure is low. He has difficulty breathing. Since he's been able to eat the past week he seemed to be feeling much better, however he has been very sick the past couple of days. My husband is reluctant in telling me anything that's going on, so I can only tell you what little he says and what little I see. I would appreciate any help you can give to understanding at best. Thank you kindley.
