Answer by Dr Heinrik M, MD  on Sun 06, Apr 2008 04:52pm:

Hi, The sonogram can suggest some features which will raise the risk of malignancy. Among the features are: the presence of microcalcification, irregular borders, increased blood flow. The microcalcification is the best single feature to predict malignancy. Hypoechogenicity does raise the risk of malignancy as opposed to hyperechogenicity. However, as a single feature – it is inadequate to predict malignancy. Based on this alone, the chances of malignancy may be anywhere from 20-40%. Discuss the other features with your doctor, and then based on the risk profile – an acceptable plan for further investigation (if needed) would be the next step.
