Treatment for Metastatic Breast Cancer - Previously treated with AC-paclitaxel and Herceptin

Asked by sb (Male ) on Mon 24, Mar 2008 12:38pm

I am a 35 year old metastatic breast cancer patient. I was previously treated with AC-paclitaxel followed by 52 weeks of Herceptin but now (18 months since the end of my treatment) the tumor has come back and spread to three lymph nodes. I have heard of lapatinib. Would that be a good option for me?

Hi, You are correct lapatinib is a valid option. Experience with Capecitabine showed improvements for patients who had previously received Herceptin. If the progression occurred during the time you were receiving Herceptin, the option is more valid. However, since you have stopped Herceptin for 18 months ( I am assuming that you were treated after surgery? Did you have metastatic disease when you started Herceptin?), treatment with Herceptin together with Taxol may also be a valid option. Discuss your options with your doctor. Part of the plan may be an evaluation of your cardiac status- as both drugs would have an impact on this organ.
