Twice tested false positive for htlv1 while donating plasma,

Asked by comedymac (Male; 42; Back in 1995, lost voice completely. After 6 months had surgery to facilitate movement in vocal cord, which at time left side was deemed "paralyzed". Surgery didnt work, but few months later, regained voice (day second surgery was scheduled). Cause was never discovered, was told possible virus, or any other sorts of reasons. No biopsy done. In 2006 began program to donate plasma, was injected with "top donor" blood to obtain level high enough to donate ( never completely understood this step) . Twice I was stopped before I ever donated plasma because I had test results that showed htlv-1 positive.First time it was believed to be because I just passed a kidney stone (have had three kidney stones from 2005 to 2007) Second time in Nov. 2007 I told my family doctor, he suggested I quit program and go to Oncologist for testing for Leukemia, which HTLV-1 positive sometimes indicates. I did not go to Oncologist due to plasma center came back and said they resubmitted sample and it was false positive for htlv-1, and I was clear health wise BUT said I should not donate blood. That confused me. Oncologists then told me no reason really for me to keep appt. . In last few months I have feeling of constantly being bloated, not matter what or amount I eat or drink. It is constant. I also have pain in hips (esp right) when I walk. My other known medical issues are been diagnosed in sept 2008 with Barrett's Esophageous, Hietal (spelling ?) hernia, and two small ulcers on esophageous. Also last several months complete lack of energy, decreased ability to exercise (even walk) like previously. And lethargy that is very uncommon. Tired at night and tired when I get up, no energy . In past I was known to not want to sit, had energy throughout day. ; Relevant drugs:Advair for asthma, chlosterol pill. Antacid when needed. ) on Tue 29, Sep 2009 12:40pm

Due to my vocal cord surgery, (that there was no found cause for loss of usage of vocal cord), two false positive results for htlv-1, constant bloating sensation after every meal, no matter what I eat or drink. Hip (right mostly) pain when walking and lethargy (at times extreme, ) and trouble sleeping with very restless sleeping habits. Minimal exercise tires me quickly. My question is should I see someone concerning these conditions? if so whom ? should i be concerned over being tested for leukemia (as the htlv1 sometimes indicates) or is this just a garden variety of symptoms I am discovery as I get older ? I have not gone to anyone because I do not want to see someone over everyday issues, yet with the issues I did have never being resolved or explained, leaves the question in the mind of what do I possibly have if anything ? Should I see someone and whom ? Your answer is greatly appreciated. My email for further info etc is comedymac@aol.com Thanks

Hi, You need to be on regular and close follow up for the Barretts esophagus since this condition is known to predispose to esophageal cancer. Were the esophageal ulcers biopsied? Regular checks with endoscopy and biopsies as and when needed are warranted. For this you should follow up with a gastroenterologist. Bloating may be associated with Barretts esophagitis. As regards your other symptoms, you should see your general physician for a complete check up and investigations as needed. You should probably consider gettng a blood work up done for blood counts, liver and kidney function etc. A chest xray and EKG may be useful. You can also get xrays for the hip pain. Further diagostic workup will depend on the results of your clinical check up and the above investigations. All the best
