Unknown Internal Growth in neck/chin region - harder and more solid than normal

Asked by iviii3b (Male; 26; No serious medical conditions.; Relevant drugs:None ) on Mon 19, May 2008 09:29pm

I have noticed an internal growth underneath my chin, near the connection to the neck that I would like to have examined, but am unsure of how to do so without medical insurance. Specifically, it is in the area where one would typically check for a sore throat. I would like to have the knowledge that this is, or is not, something I should be worrying about from a long-term standpoint, or if it is just a harmless growth.

Hi, Without a clinical examination, it is very difficult to say for sure what exactly is the "growth". From your description, it seems to be either an enlarged submandibular gland, tonsil, or a lymph node. Do you have any symptoms like fever, weight loss, or night sweats? Have you had sore throat recently? How large is the swelling? Is it soft or firm or hard? How long have you had this swelling? Is it increasing in size, or static? Is it tender to touch? How old are you? Have you been possibly exposed to mononucleosis or tuberculosis recently? If you answer these questions and provide more details, it may be possible to make a guess about the likely cause. But as I said earlier, one cannot be sure without a physical examination and a few tests if necessary. I wish you all the very best!

Hi,

With a small, tender "internal growth" without any alarming symptoms, I would guess that it is an
enlarged lymph node in your submental area (beneath the chin).

This may be related a non-specific inflammation, perhaps due to spread of mild infection from the mouth.

You should gargle with warm saline three or four times a day, use Tenolol if the soreness bothers you, and
maybe apply warm water bottle to the sore area.

If the problem persists, pl see your doctor.

Comment by iviii3b on Fri 23, May 2008 10:22am: Thank you very much for your reply. I have not had any other symptoms like the ones you describe. In terms of size, the swelling is noticeable only to the touch (i.e. I cannot see an excess growth in the mirror). When comparing it to the other side of my neck, it seems a bit firmer. I noticed it about two weeks ago (give or take) and I don't believe it has increased in size in that time period. I can't think of a situation where I was exposed to mono or TB, but can't be certain. I am 26 years old. Yesterday though, I did notice a soreness in my neck muscle on the same side of my neck. This soreness is a bit further down (closer to my adam's apple), so obviously I'm not sure if its just a pulled muscle or if if might be related.
