Any form of bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, in any patient with a previous history of cancer, should be treated or worked up as if this is cancer related until proven otherwise. For this reason, it is best to have a colonoscopy scheduled with his surgeon or gastroenterologist to pinpoint the source of this bleeding.
Other possible benign causes would include hemorrhoids, diverticula, or a free vessel in the colon. Infections caused by amebiasis may also result in some form of bleeding along with diarrhea.
