bleeding from bowel 11 months after having bowel cancer surgery

Asked by robyn low (Male; 70; No medical history. Been extremely healthy all his life. ) on Wed 23, Jul 2008 05:43am

My husband had surgery for bowel cancer 11 months ago. The surgeon was confident he got it all and he had to have no more treatment. He is now passing blood again. Does this mean the cancer has returned? He is due to have another colonscopy in a month or so but I am very worried what they might find.

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Thu 24, Jul 2008 01:11am:

Hi there. Any form of bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, in any patient with a previous history of cancer, should be treated or worked up as if this is cancer related until proven otherwise. For this reason, it is best to have a colonoscopy scheduled with his surgeon or gastroenterologist to pinpoint the source of this bleeding. Other possible benign causes would include hemorrhoids, diverticula, or a free vessel in the colon. Infections caused by amebiasis may also result in some form of bleeding along with diarrhea. Regards and God bless.
