breast growth wire surgery instead of core biopsy?

Asked by galie (Female; 58; per mammo and ultrasound two suspect areas, both right breast @ 9:00 and 12:00.small 2 mm nodule in right lung noted, not biopsied. Found on bronchoscopy last year which was done for sepsus which has since subsided.Pre-cancerous tumor removed from colon(colonoscopy). Bone scan for joints, this year, shows arthritus, suspect area on lower spine.Esinophilla, bladder inflamation/cystitus.; Relevant drugs:HRT/ Just got off HRT hormones this week ) on Mon 23, Jun 2008 05:58pm

Hi, I am scheduled for a core needle biopsy for two small suspect areas on r. breast. Question- Can't I just have them removed w/ a wire procedure and just get them out the first time? Correction, tiny right lung nodule found due to hemoptsis not sepsus

Hi there. The decision of which biopsy procedure to use will depend on a lot of factors including the size of the lesion, location, depth, and as well as the expertise of the doctor performing the procedure. A lot of doctors usually prefer the core biopsy since this procedure is easy to do, convenient, and gives good results. The disadvantage of this procedure is that small tumors may be missed, and in these situations, ultrasound guidance is usually employed. Outright excision is also an option if your doctor is comfortable with the procedure, and the size and location would allow for it (large and deep nodules may be very hard to excise outright). This should be discussed well with your surgeon. Regards.

Thank you very much. Also w/ ultrasound guiding the core biopsy will all small areas be visable? Already had
post mammo ultrasound and two areas respectively 2 and 3 centimeters on right breast were noted. So there could
be more? What about the metal clips they want to implant to mark the areas of concern. Concerned abut auto
immune reaction to metal clips since I have something they are still trying to diagnose do not want to begin
reacting to the metal clips. Can they still remove areas surgically( finding them easily) w/ out the
implantation of metal clips?Thank you for your time and expertise.
