cluster of microcalcifications

Asked by malh (Female; 58; Had biopsy in 2006 for small lesion -- benign; Relevant drugs:Premarin 6mg ) on Sun 21, Sep 2008 11:13am

I have been diagnosed with hetergeneous dense parenchyma.Indeterminate left microcalcifications in the upper inner quadrant. Was present in 2007 - according to the radiologist there is 2 new clusters.Comment from clinic- microcalcifications to be reviewed for stereo biopsy. I did have a biopsy for one cluster in 2006 this was benign but now there are 2 more that have appeared - could this be precancerous -the doctor said i must just go back for yearly check up and no appointment for biopsy - now unsure what to do do i need another biopsy and believe the doctor that said eveything is fine.

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Sun 21, Sep 2008 10:45pm:

Hi there. I believe that these microcalcifications are from a mammogram result and there is a way that we can determine if these new findings are indicative of a benign condition or something else. This is through the BIRADS classification which is a standardized reporting of the mammogram result. This will tell us if these changes or microcalcifications are most likely benign, or would warrant further investigation (you can learn more about birads here: http://biradsclass.blogspot.com) I believe that your pattern of calcifications are of benign in nature that's why your doctors would opt just to observe. But I would recommend that you continue to observe your breast, and you can also ask your radiologist about the BIRADS score of your mammogram. Regards.

HI There

I am going for a stereo biopsy on the 16th October.I have previously asked for advice now i need some more
information. I have been classified as Birad 3.What exactly does that mean - can it remain like it is or can
it turn cancerous. Its there any treatment they would give for this other than follow ups and biopsy - this is
the 2nd biopsy i am going for.I have indeterminate left microcalcifications in the upper inner quadrant.I also
have indeterminate dense parenchyma.I called the mammograpy where i had my mammogram as when i had it done the
doctor just said its all fine i can go home. When i asked my Gp she said i must go for the biopsy as stated on
my report. On calling this clinic they were amazed that i had asked to have a biopsy so they looking at my
report and said i must have one why hadnt i been scheduled for one - they were very busy that day so maybe was
a slipup.I had the mammo on the 15th Sept so now its a month later that i will be going.Your information is
very much appreciated

Thanking you kindly

Regards
