Hi,
Dry mouth is called "xerostomia" in medical terminology, and may be caused by the cancer itself, or as a result of cancer treatment (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, supportive care). The underlying cause of dry mouth is that the salivary glands that normally produce saliva become less efficient due to various causes. A dry mouth can be very uncomfortable and distressing for the patient. The patient and his/her caregivers must anticipate and prevent complications that may occur in a chronically dry mouth, especially the occurance of infection.
The basic aim of treatment is to keep the mouth moist and clean.
There are many ways we can help patients with a dry mouth. Sugarless chewing gum and hard candies seem to help many patients. Brushing his teeth at least thrice daily with a fluoride containing toothpaste is recommended. He should rinse his mouth frequently with water or saline. Tobacco products and alcohol must be avoided. Regular dental check-up is advised. Artificial saliva (containing carboxymethylcellulose) has shown mixed results.
