estrogen birth control and estrogen positive breast cancer

Asked by swobniar (Female; 22; bipolar, fibromyalgia, asthma, headaches, tmj; Relevant drugs:none ) on Mon 13, Jul 2009 04:52am

I have recently been diagnosed with poly cystic ovarian syndrome. My doctor said my options are to have a hysterectomy, take high estrogen birth control, or deal with the pain. I have a long family history of estrogen positive breast cancer can a high estrogen based birth control raise your risk of getting breast cancer even more? My gyn did not seemed concerned about me taking the pill, however my pcp did. I can not seem to find any info on this. Can you help?

Answer by Dr Veena, MD  on Wed 15, Jul 2009 12:02pm:

Hi, Polycystic ovarian syndrome has wide options in treatment these days. High dose estrogens increase the risk of endometrial cancer. It also depends upon the duration of treatment, age and family history of the patient. I would recommend that you take a second opinion from a OB/GYN specialist regarding the treatment options for PCOS.
