Asked by stefania91 (Female; 48; thelasemea ) on Mon 16, Nov 2009 12:54am

hello there, i have a question regarding my mum. she is 48, on no medications, never had any health problems in her life. for the past 11 months she has this cough. it is real irritating for her and she has been bringing up stuff lately, not sure if she was at the start of year but she is now. she is also serverly anemic. at the moment her hemoglobin is 75. she has thelasemea and usually she is around 97. in june she had her left kidney removed due to cancer. the doctors said that the anemia was a reslut of the cancer but 6 months on she is still anemaic. when they first found out how low her levels were, (i think this was in may perhaps), she had two blood transfusion and i think she went back up to 80 but she soon went back down agian. after she had her operation this cough that she has dissapeard as well for 2 months but then came back in august. for the past few years she has always seemed to get this cough at the start of evey year and it usually just lasts for 3 months. it just so happend that this time it went on for longer so she went to hemotologists and other doctors to see about it and she was sent for a CT scan which is how the cancer was found. last month she had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy, both of which came up clear. she has also tried possibly every cough medicine on the market but nothing seems to work. what could be causing this cough and why is she so anemic?

Answer by Dr JS Anand  on Tue 17, Nov 2009 01:56am:

Hi, I’ll suggest some tests to search for the cause of the chronic cough which she’s suffering from along with the tests of anaemia. She’ll probably need an x-ray of the chest and maybe a CT scan of chest to look for the cause of cough. It might be due to some structural problem like an enlarged lymph node which might be pressing upon the bronchi causing the cough. The thalassemia might be the reason she’s not responding to the medications for anaemia. I’ll suggest a bone marrow examination to rule out any other cause of anaemia. She should be cautious while taking the iron pills as that can lead to iron toxicity. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
