hodgkins lymphoma: what is the risk of recurence?

Asked by user (Male ) on Tue 05, Feb 2008 09:25pm

A good friend of mine has been diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma about 5 years ago. He seems to be doing fine right now. What is the typical risk of recurrence for that type of cancer?

Answer by Dr Heinrik M, MD  on Wed 13, Feb 2008 09:01am:

Hi, It's good to hear your friend is doing well. In general, given adequate treatment, patients with Hodgkin's disease have a 5 year survival of 80%. If your friend was classified as Early stage - the figure may even increase to 90-95%.

Thanks Rand MD. Since he has already survived 5 years and is healthy without any recurrence. Can he be
considered cured. What could be his expected 10 year survival from now on? Thanks in advance.

Comment by Dr Heinrik M, MD on Sun 17, Feb 2008 06:34pm: Hi, Good to hear from you again. If your friend is under 65, then chances are he has been cured. The 10 year survival rates parallel the 5-year data, so it is very likely that cure has been achieved. Currently, cure is common and hence steps being taken for Hodgkin's lymphoma today involves exploring the lowest dose/least toxic treatment to achieve the cure, which raises the following issue: While it is wonderful to return to former lifestyle, it is important to monitor for possible late side-effects of treatment. If your friend received radiation to the chest, regular skin examinations and breast exams (if female). If the radiation involved the neck - regular check ups with the dentist and endocrinologist/internist (to monitor for thyroid dysfunction). Immunizations for pneumococcus are likewise important. If your friend is 65 years old and up, the 5 year survival may not be enough to estimate the 10 year survival, but this is partly because of the higher probability of death due to causes other than cancer. I think the same issues regarding survivorship apply. There should be less anxiety now though, than the anxiety about the recurrence during the first 2 years.
