Hyaluronic Acid Supplements - Are hyaluronic oral supplements considered safe?

Asked by lisadickerson (Male ) on Thu 03, Apr 2008 10:32am :

Are low molecular weight hyaluronic acid oral supplements considered safe to take? I read a report that indicated high HA levels were related to breast/bladder cancer and another report that claimed HA was potentially healing for cancer? Thanks!

Answer by Dr Fernando, MD (oncologist) on Thu 03, Apr 2008 07:57pm:

Hi, Hyaluronic acid is a type of long unbranched carbohydrate chain found in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue, nerves, and epithelium. The body's hyaluronic acid is produced directly by the epithelial, neural, and connective tissue cells, and does not come from food absorbed from the intestines. Any hyaluronic acid ingested orally (even the low molecular weight types)will be broken down into component molecules (monosaccharides) during digestion. Hyaluronic acid supplements are probably safe to take since they're digested anyway. But since these supplements are not likely absorbed by the body AS INTACT hyaluronic acid, I don't expect these supplements to exert any biologic effects on the body. There have been studies correlating tumor aggressiveness with a "hyaluronic acid rich" extracellular environment. Again, the hyaluronic acid mentioned in these studies refer to substances produced "de novo" by nearby cells of that particular tissue, and do not refer to hyaluronic acid absorbed from food.
