Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD (oncologist) on Fri 04, Apr 2008 12:53pm:

Hi, Although you have not mentioned it in your post, but my guess is that your brother is receiving chemotherapy for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia. High dose Ara-C is an integral part of this regimen. One common side effect of this drug given in high doses is "chemical conjunctivitis". Your oncologist correctly anticipated this problem, and started prophylactic steroid eye drops. This, however, could not prevent the complication, and conjunctivitis has developed. This needs attention of your oncologist, and maybe a consultation of the ophthalmologist. The danger is that it is likely that your brothers' WBC count is expected to drop over the next few days due to consolidation chemotherapy. In case secondary bacterial infection develops in the inflames conjunctiva, it could be a worrying symptom. Please seek an urgent appointment with your oncologist.
