Help - Low platelet count - Do I have to be concerned about leukemia

Asked by hessman22 (Male ) on Tue 08, Apr 2008 12:10pm :

My doctor told me all of my blood work was normal, except for my platelets. They were at 115,000. He wants me to get checked again in a month when I take my glucose test. The only thing he wants checked are my platelets. My mom has low blood platelets and they put her on Vitamin C and Iron, she said her platelets went up but were still not at normal range. Could this be heredity? I show no signs of fatigue , bleeding gums. I really didn't bruise after they drew blood. I did bruise the other day when I ran into the bar on my daughters stroller, but that has been the only thing I have noticed. Do I have to be concerned about leukemia, or is it something else. My Doctor didn't seem like he was in a great concern.

Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD (oncologist) on Thu 10, Apr 2008 12:34pm:

Hi, With a normal blood count (platelets of 115,000 are just under the lower end of normal range), and no significant symptoms, I think that there is nothing to suggest leukemia. There is no need to worry. Iron and Vitamin C are not proven to increase platelet counts, so there is no evidence to recommend them in your case. You certainly do not have leukemia; you probably do not have any other serious condition either. Mildly low platelets are not alarming. Not till these fall below 20,000 in asymptomatic patients do they increase risk of bleeding. Wish you all the best!
