Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD (oncologist) on Thu 10, Apr 2008 01:14pm:

Hi, With recent stress at your workplace, your symptoms may be nothing more than a viral infection. You have throat pain, probably because of congested mucosa in the pharynx. Neck nodes have enlarged, probably as a consequence of throat congestion. The tiredness may be related to the increased workload, or the throat congestion. What is the underlying cause of the throat condition? Most likely, it is viral in origin. Epstein-Barr virus can cause symptoms similar to those described by you, in a condition commonly known as infectious mononucleosis. However, your symtoms may also be because of bacterial infection. What should you do? Avoid ice-creams or very hot coffee for a few days. Warm saline gargles three or four times a day will help. A tablet of Acetaminophen may help reduce throat discomfort. In case symptoms persist after a couple of days, pl visit your doctor. He or she may like to do some blood tests and a throat swab to determine the exact cause. One final point: Could this be cancer or lymphoma? Unlikely, given your short history of vague symptoms. None of the "alarm symptoms" like fever, weight loss, or night sweats are present in your case. Wish you all the best!
