Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD (oncologist) on Fri 11, Apr 2008 01:17pm:

Hi, Medulloblastoma is the commonest brain cancer in the pediatric population. Your son has recurrent medulloblastoma in the brain, with spread ("seeding", "drop metastases") in the spinal cord. Some forms of medulloblastoma, like the desmoplastic variant, are very aggressive, and may recur quickly after therapy. Although there is at present no "curative" treatment for your son at this advanced stage of brain cancer, chemotherapy may have a good initial response in controlling the cancer. This may help prolong the time to further progression of the disease. Several single agents and combination chemotherapy agents have been tried in progressive and recurrent medulloblastoma. Also, there are many palliative interventions that can help him remain comfortable and improve his quality of life. Steroids may lower raised intra cranial pressure, as may the placement of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. Pain control, anti-epileptics, and other supportive care can improve his quality of life. I wish you strength and courage during this difficult time. God Bless.
