Blood results started at 38 in feb 07 with slight variations up and down . I am taking part in the uk foccs study and they were happy with the results. However my latest result was 47 and they want me to be re-tested in about six weeks. Should I be worried?

Answer by Dr Heinrik M, MD (oncologist) on Fri 25, Apr 2008 10:59am:

Hi, I congratulate you for participating in a very important trial. This study uses more than the CA 125 to make decisions. The idea behind the trial is to combine the information from imaging with an ultrasound, the blood test (CA-125) and clinical features and physical examination. If everything else is within normal, then the recommendation would likely be to check the change over an interval period. By itselt, CA 125 is not a strong enough predictor of who should undergo surgery or not. Your participation means you are taking an active position, we are all looking for early detection of disease. Anxiety may increase when such features as changes in blood tests happen, the question is would you have less anxiety if you decided not to participate? Listen to your body, if other things change. If you feel anything different, then you shouldn't have to wait for the 6 weeks to see your doctor, a new evaluation is warranted at that point. Stay positive
