Hi, Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia mimics low-grade carcinoma in-site (this represents a pre-cancer, since there is proliferative potential but the capacity to invade has not been demonstrated), this places you at higher risk for breast cancer than the general population. Breast cancer may develop within the next 10 to 15 years.Risk generally tapers off after 15 years. A problem with this finding is that it places you at risk for cancer on both breasts, hence routine removal of a focal area in question may not elminate the risk. In general, close follow-up is recommended for this finding. The columnar cell change is a bit difficult to assess as there are a number of different names used in the medical literature to describe such changes, hence defining its behavior is tough. In general, because it is associated with other findings such as carcinoma in-situ, it is recommended to have it excised to make certain that no such hidden pre-cancers are present. Discuss with your doctor your over-all risk for developing breast cancer. The atypical ductal hyperplasia is not strong enough a risk factor to make a decision to undergo chemoprevention strategies or surgical strategies (such as removing both your breasts or both your ovaries) in an effort to decrease chances of subsequent malignancy. Stay positive.
