Thank you for your response; it was very helpful and I really appreciate it. We will ask our Dr. about Velcade. Dr. is now moving my husband out to 8 weeks between chemo treatments. We want to understand why he has to do this if his blood levels are good? The Dr. said it was to keep extend the length of remission? but we're not sure we understand this......Also why can't he have a stem cell transplant?

Hi. From the chemotherapy intervals that you have described, I believe that your doctor is implementing a protocol with a "maintenance" form of treatment. This is usually given after an "intensive" phase of chemotherapy (the more frequent sessions the patient had earlier). The maintenance phase is given for a longer period of time to decrease the chance of recurrence. S Some doctors would reserve stem cell transplantation for relapsed or highly refractory patients, which is an acceptable practice at the present. Regards.
