Lung Cancer

Asked by michele1017 (Female; 63; Lung Cancer diagnosed March 1998. Had Left Lung totally removed. ) on Thu 18, Feb 2010 12:37pm :

My mother had her left lung removed in 3/98. She has been totally cancer free for 13 years now. Now she keeps getting fluid in her arms. The doctors are telling us this is from having the lung removed. The fluid has no where to go. We find this unbelievable and do not feel they are related. Can we get your input?

Answer by bobby s, md (oncologist) on Mon 01, Mar 2010 11:05am:

Hi, Effects of cancer surgery may manifest quite late in many patients. For example after breast cancer surgery where axillary lymph nodes are removed, many women develop arm swelling (lymphedema) several years later. In your mothers case, the most important issue is to ensure that she is cancer-free (by CT scan etc), ruling out any other conditions (general medical and surgical review) and referring to a physiotherapist for management of arm swelling. All the best, and God Bless!
