My friend has been diagnosed with 4 stage cancer of unknown origin in the GI system. His oncologist is unable to refer us to a top teaching hospital in our area. What are our options?

Answer by bobby s, md (oncologist) on Tue 20, Jul 2010 02:37pm:

Hello,

The ideal situation of course would be to undergo evaluation and investigation in a specialized oncology hospital. Perhaps the tissue of origin could be determined, and appropriate treatment instituted.

In case the referral cannot be made because of administrative or other reasons, it may be worthwhile looking for clinical trials in which to enroll your friend.

Please discuss with the treating doctor.

All the best, and God Bless!
