Hi, I am a relatively healthy, non smoking 41 year old female and mother of four young girls. I had a chest xray a few days ago for pain in my ribs due to coughing from Bronchitis for about 4 weeks now. The xrays revealed a 3mm noncalcified nodule in the right lower lobe and a 2mm nodule in the left lower lobe with no evidence of infiltrate and costophrenic angles are clear. My doctor suggested repeat xray in 3 months but I'm getting a referral for pulmonologist tomorrow. How concerned should I be that this is cancer, especially with the nodules being noncalcified? Thank you so much! Robyn

Answer by Dr Dennis S, MD (oncologist) on Wed 28, Jul 2010 07:47pm:

Hi Robyn. You mentioned that you have been coughing lately due to bronchitis. The nodules seen in your chest x-ray could be enlarged lymph nodes secondary to your respiratory tract infection. I agree with your doctor to have a repeat chest x-ray done after 3 months. However, the infection should be treated with appropriate antibiotic. Further work-up is warranted if you remain symptomatic even after treatment. Hope this helps. Regards.
